COPES June NEWS 2021

ZOOM in JUNE: Saturday June 5th. From 10.00

Passcode by message or email. Next Zoom: Sat July 3rd. at 10.

As promised, here’s Liz’s feedback from her course on genetic counselling:

I was very fortunate to be allocated a funded place and join a group of specialist nurses across the country as the first cohort in a newly designed course.
This was delivered by the University of West England, in correlation with Health Education England, as part of the government’s initiative to develop the skills of senior nurses in genetic counselling at a mainstreaming level.

The course was delivered over 4 months, giving me the outcome of a wealth of new knowledge in genetics, and 15 credits at Masters level, which I plan to convert into a Masters programme over the next 2-3 years.

As a CNS team we are now working closely with the local genetics department to ensure that all of our ladies have access to the genetic assessments and referrals they deserve.  This is in relation to BRCA testing and Lynch Syndrome.

National guidelines have recently changed, and are forever evolving.  This course has enabled me and our team to gain a greater insight and awareness, to ensure we are giving our ladies the best outcome in terms of their genetic assessments and treatment.

As a follow on from the course, and as part of my assessment, I have designed a patient information leaflet regarding BRCA testing, which will soon be available for use in practice.

A big (sad) COPES Thank You to Rachael Edgley.

Rachael has decided, “with a heavy heart”, that her time with COPES as a volunteer Therapist and alternative practitioner has come to an end. She and her husband have decided it’s time for a house move and she has been exploring new avenues and qualifications in her support for others and her teaching.

So many of us have really enjoyed the caring way in which Rachael has supported us over the last few years. Her kindness and sensitive support have been much appreciated by all who experienced her therapies. She says she’ll keep in touch and drop in to say hello if she’s in the area. Her message to us all is: ”I shall always hold you dear to my heart and keep you all in my prayers.”

Thank you, Rachael. We will miss you xx
