Who we are…

COPES stands for Cervical, Ovarian, Perineal, Endometrial (cancer) Support.

COPES started in Nov 2005 and was initially established by the Gynaecology Team, including consultant, Mr Razvi, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Emma Chaplin, healthcare assistants, Sue Page, Chris Sewell and Mo Webster along with patients at that time. The need for additional support, awareness and research was identified by these professionals.

After the running of COPES by the gynae oncology team became unfeasible, in 2015, due to personnel changes and workload on the Gynaecology Team, it was decided to develop COPES further, in a slightly different way, responding to the needs at that time.

Patient needs were identified and developed into the foundation of an Executive Committee This committee is drawn from the membership, working in a volunteer capacity.

This Executive Committee comprises Wendy Davies (chair), Chris Roostan (vice chair) and Sue Soper (secretary). See picture below.

We are currently seeking to recruit other members, their friends or families to support us on the committee.

The Exec Committee currently organises monthly support meetings, well-being events and educational events and fundraising events. The Exec Committee also run awareness raising events in relation to the signs and symptoms of gynae cancers and the work of COPES. However, there is a vital need for more members to become involved in assisting the Exec Committee, as there have been several occasions recently when family commitments have meant that one or more exec members have been unable to run the usual programme of events. This need for new Exec members will get more pressing with the coming years. The present executive committee is pictured below (left to right): Sue Soper (secretary), Chris Roostan (vice chair) and Wendy Davies (chair). We always welcome new volunteers.

The Charity’s main aims’ are patient support, research, education and raising awareness of gynaecological cancers within the Essex area. Our aim is to support women who are diagnosed and to reduce the number of women diagnosed at a later stage.

COPES Executive Committee works very closely with the MSE Hospital’s Gynae Oncology team, having quarterly meetings with the team members, past and present members and the partner of a previous member.

We run as a small charity, too small to qualify for a registered charity number. We work closely with the MSE hospitals Charity, whose RCN we use for specific fundraising projects.

We all strive to provide best treatment options available for each patient we care for. Resources are stretched in the NHS so to be able to do this we rely so heavily on the additional and supplementary funds raised by COPES.

COPES is heading towards its 20th anniversary,  going from strength to strength and supporting more and more women.

We are always seeking to recruit new members on our committee. Please get in touch if you feel that you can help us to extend the work of COPES.
